The Sterling ion separator is used to divert the charging current from an alternator to two or three separate batteries. This results in the batteries being completely isolated from each other. This function is very important for separating starter and passenger batteries. The use of ion separators has the advantage that the starter battery remains fully charged even when the passenger battery is completely discharged.
