A fire on board is one of the most dangerous emergencies on the water, making a functioning fire extinguisher a vital part of your mandatory safety equipment. A boat fire can spread quickly and poses a serious threat to the crew, boat, and other watercraft. Therefore, every boat should have at least one suitable fire extinguisher on board, regardless of size or propulsion type. In the awn online shop, you'll find suitable fire extinguishers for your onboard safety needs.

  • Fire extinguishers are a must on every boat

Fires on board can be caused by faulty electrical equipment, gas leaks, or flammable liquids. Since smoke and heat can quickly build up in enclosed cabins and spread the fire, quick action is vital. A reliable fire extinguisher enables initial firefighting before an incipient fire develops into a disaster.

  • Extinguish fires early

A boat fire is difficult to control – water sources are scarce, flammable materials are usually plentiful, and the crew is trapped in a confined space. Fire extinguishers are the most important tool for immediate firefighting in this situation. In an emergency, the quick access to the fire extinguisher can make the difference between safety and danger.

  • Fire classes: What you should pay attention to

Fire extinguishers are classified according to fire classes, depending on the type of fire to be fought:
Class A: Solid materials such as wood, paper, textiles
Class B: Liquids such as petrol, oil, alcohol
Class C: Gases such as propane, butane
Class D: Metals such as magnesium
Class F: Edible oils and fats
For boats, Class AB or ABC fire extinguishers with extinguishing powder are particularly recommended, as they cover the most common sources of fire on board.

  • Don't forget maintenance & visual inspection

Fire extinguishers should be serviced or replaced every two years. A monthly visual inspection is also recommended: Is the device undamaged? Has it been stored correctly? Is the expiration date still valid? Only a fully functional extinguisher can save lives in an emergency.

  • Safe storage on board

The fire extinguisher should be stored in a dry, clearly visible, and easily accessible location – ideally near the escape routes. All crew members should be informed of its exact location. This way, no time is lost in an emergency.
