  • What are blocks and how do they work?

Blocks consist of a housing with one or more rotating sheaves that change the direction of tension of the rope. Traditional blocks are made of wood, while modern models are made of plastic, aluminum, or steel. The sheaves usually have ball bearings to minimize running resistance; some have low-maintenance plain bearings. The size and design vary depending on the intended use, ensuring optimal use on board.

  • Different types of blocks

There are multi-sheave blocks, where several sheaves run on different or common axes. A special type is the fiddle block, which is often used on dinghies and, due to its special shape, contains two sheaves of different sizes. Other variants include ratchet, regatta, and folding blocks, each of which fulfills specific functions and meets different requirements.
