Primers

(5 products)

A reliable paint job starts with the right primer. This creates the ideal foundation for long-lasting finishes and effectively protects the boat hull from external influences such as moisture or corrosion. Whether GRP, wood, or metal – at awn you'll find the right primer for every material.

  • Primers for boats and yachts – The right basis for long-lasting protection

Primers form the first coat of paint directly on the boat's surface. They protect the surface and ensure optimal adhesion of subsequent coats. A consistent primer coat improves the color's appearance and contributes to long-lasting protection. Depending on the substrate, the number of coats that must be applied thoroughly and evenly varies. Up to 80% of the work involved in painting a boat is spent on preparation—primers are therefore essential for a professional result.

  • Material-dependent properties of boat primers

Whether GRP, wood, aluminum, or steel – primers must be suitable for the respective boat material. Wooden boats have special requirements depending on the construction method (e.g., clinker or carvel). Flexible one-component primers are particularly suitable for solid wood constructions. Manufacturers always indicate material compatibility to make the right choice easier.

  • Applications of primers in boat building

Primers are used both above and below the waterline. They serve as a barrier primer, adhesion promoter, or corrosion inhibitor, and also support osmosis protection. The exact suitability of a product can be found in the technical data sheets or product descriptions in the awn online shop.
