The McMurdo EPIRB Smartfind G8 AIS is a newly developed emergency radio beacon. It utilizes all aspects of emergency alerting and localization on four frequencies. A frequency of 406 MHz is used for alerting via satellite. The emergency radio beacon transmits a direction finding signal for search aircraft and ships on 121.5 MHz. It also includes an AIS emergency transmitter for local alerting of vessels in the area.
