The vacuum valve is an inexpensive insurance policy against water ingress into the engine and the associated expensive repairs. The maximum ambient temperature should not exceed 60°C.

The valve opens at a pressure equivalent to a water column of 3-5 cm. The materials used are seawater-resistant and suitable for use with freshwater and glycol in typical concentrations. The valve should not be exposed to oils and greases and should be cleaned or replaced immediately if it becomes dirty.
