X7 Sports Boat Scandinavian Eight, Ocean Sailing Boat, Sporty and Adventurous

Wilfried Erdmann, Germany's most famous sailor, was on the move again! As so often, with a new boat, an extremely sporty X7. Together with his "round-the-world sailor" Astrid, the wake traced a large "Scandinavian figure eight" across the Baltic Sea for a summer. Destinations included Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Heading north, of course. That sounds like the wet breath of both the Baltic and North Seas. It smells of wilderness and challenge with this summer boat. Fabulous views!

A summer cruise demands simplicity – at least if you want to experience sailing as a great freedom, as Wilfried Erdmann has advocated for years. The boat is sporty. Movable backstays and a variety of trimming devices require constant attention – especially because Astrid, an excellent helmswoman, gets a kick out of leaving other yachts behind. The reward: speeds of 6 knots are not uncommon, with speeds as high as 7 or 8 knots recorded. Comfort is sacrificed, including the autopilot, standing headroom, and railings – things that much younger sailors would never want to be without. But even here, rewards await, especially in the form of recognition: "No engine, no sprayhood, no railings – good job!" they hear in Norway.

After 75 days, 1,000 nautical miles have been logged. Even on the way, both are certain: it will never be this beautiful again.
