Description
Description
The PSS Type A shaft seal is a mechanical face seal. The sealing surface is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front of the bellows with hose clamps, and the rear end of the bellows is secured via the star tube with hose clamps. The stainless steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The stainless steel rotor is used to compress the bellows before the rotor is attached to the shaft with setscrews. This compression (preload) ensures constant contact between the two flat sides of the stainless steel rotor and the carbon flange. This allows the PSS shaft seal to compensate for the variable forward and backward movement caused by the propeller thrust. The carbon flange is overbored to the shaft diameter, allowing it to "float" around the shaft, thus compensating for most misalignment and vibration problems. The stainless steel rotor is sealed to the shaft by two O-rings embedded in the collar bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and the stainless steel rotor and are not subject to wear during operation.
